Running Towards Possibility

Why Chromtech Supports the Next Generation of Athletes

When Prudence Sekgodiso crossed the line to win the women’s 1500m at the Simbine Classic in 4:08.93, it was a performance that carried weight beyond the stopwatch.

Already recognised as one of South Africa’s leading middle-distance athletes, Sekgodiso, a World Indoor champion and Diamond League winner, led a strong field, with Karabo More finishing second in 4:11.90 and Carina Viljoen third in 4:17.02.

For Chromtech, sponsor of the women’s 1500m race, the result represented far more than a podium finish. It reflected the very qualities the company believes young people need to build their futures: discipline, patience, resilience, and belief.

Because athletics, at its best, does more than produce winners. It creates possibility.

The Simbine Classic is steadily building into one of South Africa’s most important athletics events, with ambitions to reach World Athletics Continental Tour Gold status. But what makes it different is its wider purpose: creating a visible pathway from grassroots participation to elite international competition.

That pathway was evident throughout the day.

From children as young as seven taking part in developmental track activities to world-class athletes competing at the highest level, the event was designed to show young people what is possible when talent meets opportunity.

Through the Akani Simbine Foundation’s Taste of Track initiative, more than 1,500 children and parents were introduced to athletics in a world-class environment, many for the very first time.

For Chromtech, that matters.

The company’s support of the women’s 1500m was deliberate. It is a race that demands more than speed. It requires judgement, timing, endurance, and the courage to stay in the contest when it hurts, qualities that mirror growth not only in sport, but in life.

It also shines an important light on women’s athletics, giving young girls visible examples of excellence to aspire to.

For Chromtech, whose social investment philosophy is rooted in youth development and community upliftment, sport is a natural extension of that commitment.

As Chromtech CEO Jono Gay explains:

“A race like the 1500 metres is about more than competition. It’s about resilience, discipline and belief. Those are the same qualities we want to help build in young people. Supporting the Simbine Classic creates moments where children can see what’s possible and begin to believe they can achieve it too.”

The Simbine Classic delivered winners on the track. But perhaps its greatest success lies beyond the finish line.

In the stands. In the early races. In the minds of young athletes watching someone like Prudence Sekgodiso and realising that the distance between dreaming and achieving may not be as far as it seems.

Because sometimes the most important race is not the one being won.

It’s the one just beginning.
