Unlocking efficiency in our chrome ore pipeline
Pioneering chrome logistics
Bleskop Rail and Logistics (BRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of ChromTech, plays a pivotal role in the logistics of the company’s intricate chrome ore value chain. BRL’s main objective is the efficient and cost-effective transportation of chrome ore produced by ChromTech operations to its customers via Richards Bay. As rail services improve, this service may expand to cater to other chrome producers in the future.
From paper to practice
In 2015, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) was inked with the Royal Bafokeng Administration to lease an unused siding close to the company’s chrome operations. By 2018, the ground-breaking ceremony marked the dawn of a transformative phase. By 2019, the first ore-laden wagons embarked on their journey to Richards Bay.
Innovative improvements
BRL’s vision extends beyond transportation; it’s about refining the entire process. The development of an on-site laboratory is a testament to this dedication. Initially focused on moisture analysis, the lab has evolved to offer comprehensive product analysis of all ore handled through the facility.
This progression not only provides key product data to ore producers but also underscores the lab’s capacity to analyse for all key elements required for sales purposes.
Moisture analysis is a crucial aspect, but it’s only one part of the broader analysis story. Technicians meticulously analyse the moisture content in the chrome concentrate before its transport. To illustrate the importance: transporting ore with a 10% moisture content across 75 wagons equates to an astounding 450 tons of water. By reducing moisture to just 4%, the financial savings are significant.
With these advancements, the laboratory holds promise as a potential service hub for smaller chrome producers in the future.
Addressing the logistical challenges posed by moisture, stockpiles are thoroughly drained before transportation, ensuring the chrome retains its quality. Given the critical role of weight in transportation, BRL implements rigorous checks at every stage, from ore delivery to wagon loading.
Eco-friendly development and community ties
BRL practices an unwavering commitment to both the environment and the community. Chrome stockpiles can release dust particles, which may pose risks to adjacent communities. BRL’s innovative solution is a “dust skin” polymer, which not only curtails dust pollution, but also shields the chrome from rain.
BRL has fostered robust ties with neighbouring communities. Its stakeholder engagement strategy emphasises local procurement and employment, with about 80% of their workforce hailing from the surrounding communities.
A blueprint for the future
With a forward-looking approach, BRL is examining new transportation routes, including potential paths to alternative ports such as Maputo and Durban. The company’s prospective expansion to possibly accommodate additional ore producers seeking a more efficient logistics ally hinges on the enhancement of the rail network.
